Shake, watch, wonder — the simplest magic you can make
TODDLER CRAFTS AND CONNECTION

Sensory bottles (sometimes called calm-down bottles or discovery bottles) are one of those beautiful ideas that sound almost too simple to work, and then you hand one to a baby and watch what happens.
The slow swirl of glitter, the tumble of small objects, the way the light catches the liquid - it is genuinely mesmerising for babies of all ages. They're also wonderfully calming, which makes them useful at the most beautifully inconvenient times. Best of all, you can make them together as a craft and then use them as a toy - two activities in one!
Why This Activity Works for Babies
Sensory bottles support visual tracking - babies follow the movement of objects inside with their eyes, which strengthens the muscles and neural pathways involved in vision. The shaking motion also introduces early cause and effect understanding: I shake this, something happens. For older babies and toddlers, the calming, slow movement of a glitter bottle has a genuinely soothing quality that can help with overstimulation or transitions.
Activity Details
Age Range: 3 – 12 months
Time: 20 minutes to make, then ongoing use
Mess Level: Minimal - make over a sink!
Supervision: Always supervised - ensure bottles are sealed tightly
What You'll Need
Small clear plastic bottles with secure lids — water bottles work well
Warm water
Clear hair gel or glycerine (slows the movement beautifully)
Food colouring (optional)
Strong waterproof glue to seal the lid permanently
How To Do It
Fill a clean plastic bottle about halfway with warm water.
Add a generous squeeze of clear hair gel - this slows everything down to a beautiful drift.
Add a spoonful of fine glitter and a few sequins or small objects.
Add a drop or two of food colouring if you'd like a coloured bottle.
Top up with a little more water, leaving a small air gap.
Seal the lid very tightly - then run a ring of strong waterproof glue around the top and let it dry completely.
Once dry and fully sealed, hand to baby and watch the wonder!
Kim's Tips 💕
The more gel you use, the slower and more mesmerising the movement - experiment to find the perfect speed.
A gold glitter bottle with warm water is absolutely beautiful - like a little snowglobe.
Make a collection of different bottles - one with shells, one with buttons, one with glitter - each is a different sensory experience.
These are wonderful for car trips, waiting rooms or any moment when you need something calming and captivating.
Always ensure the lid is completely and permanently sealed before giving to baby.
