You don't need to travel anywhere to discover something extraordinary - sometimes you just need to sit still and look up. A backyard bird watching journal is one of those activities that starts as a simple afternoon project and quietly becomes a lifelong practice.

Your tween will be amazed at how many different birds visit your garden once they start paying attention.

Why This Works

Bird watching is the perfect antidote to the constant stimulation tweens are surrounded by. It requires stillness, patience and observation - and rewards all three with moments of genuine wonder. Keeping a journal adds a beautiful creative element, combining nature, writing, drawing and science in one activity.

Activity Details

Age Group: Tweens 11–14

Time: Ongoing - start with 60 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

What You Need

  • A notebook or journal dedicated to bird watching

  • Pencils and fine liners for sketching

  • Binoculars (optional but wonderful)

  • A local bird identification guide or app (Merlin Bird ID is excellent and free)

  • Bird feeder to attract visitors (optional)

Steps

  1. Set up a comfortable observation spot in the garden or near a window with a good view.

  2. If using a bird feeder, set it up a few days before to start attracting visitors.

  3. Begin your journal with the date, time, weather and location.

  4. Observe quietly for at least 30 minutes, noting every bird you see.

  5. Record each bird - sketch it, note its colours, size, behaviour and any sounds it makes.

  6. Use your identification guide or app to name each species.

  7. Return to the same spot regularly and build your bird list over time.

Kim's Tips 💕

  • Early morning is the best time for bird activity - the dawn chorus is extraordinary!

  • The Merlin Bird ID app is completely free and identifies birds by sound - your tween will love it

  • A simple bird feeder attracts so many more species - find a beautiful one on my Amazon storefront!

  • Press and dry any feathers found on the ground and add them to the journal pages
