Every child has seen a baking soda volcano. But not every child has built one from scratch - sculpted the mountain, painted the lava channels, set up the experiment properly and then varied the quantities to see what changes the eruption.

For children aged 7–10, taking the classic baking soda volcano and turning it into a genuine science project is a completely different and far richer experience. This is the version where the building takes an afternoon, the experimenting takes another, and the results are recorded like a real scientist would. It is genuinely one of the most satisfying projects a child this age can do.

Why This Activity Works

Children this age are ready to understand the actual chemistry behind the reaction - baking soda is a base, vinegar is an acid, and when they meet they produce carbon dioxide gas which creates the bubbles and foam.

Understanding the why transforms the experience from a fun trick into real scientific thinking. The experimental element - varying quantities, adding different ingredients, recording results - introduces the scientific method in a completely engaging way. And building the volcano structure first gives the project a satisfying physical outcome before the science even begins.

Activity Details

Age Range: 7 – 10 years

Time: 2–3 hours across two sessions

Mess Level: Moderate — papier-mâché and eruptions! 🌋

Supervision: Nearby supervision

What You'll Need

For building the volcano:

  • A small plastic bottle - a water bottle works perfectly

  • A sturdy base - a piece of cardboard or a tray

  • Newspaper torn into strips

  • PVA glue diluted with water for papier-mâché

  • Paint — brown, grey and black for the mountain, red and orange for lava channels

  • Optional: model trees, toy dinosaurs or figures for scene setting

For the eruption experiment:

  • Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)

  • White vinegar

  • Red and orange food colouring

  • Washing up liquid

  • A measuring spoon and jug for the experiment

  • A science notebook for recording results

How To Do It

Session 1 — Build the Volcano:

  1. Tape the plastic bottle securely to the cardboard base.

  2. Scrunch newspaper into shapes around the bottle to build up the mountain form.

  3. Apply papier-mâché strips - dip newspaper strips in diluted PVA and layer over the structure.

  4. Build up 3–4 layers for strength, leaving the bottle opening clear.

  5. Allow to dry completely - overnight is best.

  6. Paint the volcano - grey and brown for the rocky mountain, red and orange channels for dried lava, black at the crater.

  7. Add scene-setting details - model trees, a village at the base, toy figures fleeing!

  8. Allow paint to dry completely.

Session 2 — The Experiment:

  1. Set up the science notebook - record the hypothesis: what do you think will happen?

  2. Start with a standard eruption - 2 tbsp baking soda, 100ml vinegar, a few drops of food colouring, a squeeze of washing up liquid.

  3. Record the results - how high? How long did it last? How much foam?

  4. Vary the experiment - more baking soda, less vinegar, no washing up liquid - and record what changes.

  5. Try warm vinegar vs cold vinegar - does temperature affect the reaction?

  6. Draw conclusions - what made the biggest eruption? Why?

Kim's Tips 💕

  • The papier-mâché needs to be completely dry before painting - patience here makes an enormous difference to the finished result.

  • Warm vinegar produces a more dramatic reaction than cold - a fascinating variable to test.

  • A science notebook with proper headings - hypothesis, method, results, conclusion - makes this feel genuinely scientific and children respond to that seriousness beautifully.

  • Adding washing up liquid to the vinegar before pouring creates the most spectacular foamy lava - highly recommended.

  • This is a wonderful project for grandchildren on a longer visit - build on day one, erupt on day two, the anticipation between sessions is wonderful.

  • Set up a proper "science lab" at the kitchen table with labelled ingredients - children absolutely love the ceremony of a proper experiment.
