Candied Orange Peel Dipped in Chocolate
A Sweet Little Jewel
When I was little, a box of chocolate-dipped orange peel was the grown-up sweet at Christmas, the one that sat on the good plate next to the coffee. It looks like something you'd buy in a fancy shop, and it's made from the part of the orange most of us throw in the bin. Soft, chewy, tangy peel in a sugar coat, with a dark chocolate end. It's just lovely.
It takes patience rather than skill. You simmer, you wait, you simmer again, and then you let the peel dry overnight. Almost all of it is hands-off. If you can boil a pot of water, you can do this.

Making It With the Kids/Grandkids
The simmering is for adults, but there are good jobs for children in the other stages.
• Ages 3 and up: scrub the oranges (a nail brush is fun) and roll the dried strips in sugar.
• Ages 5 and up: peel the quartered skins away from the pith, and toss the strips in sugar. They can also add the sprinkles.
• Ages 8 and up: dip the strips in warm (not hot) melted chocolate, under supervision.
• Adults only: the knife work, the blanching, and the hot syrup.
