Every child knows that heavy things sink and light things float - until they discover that a massive cruise ship floats and a tiny pebble sinks, and suddenly everything they thought they understood needs rethinking. Density and buoyancy is one of those science concepts that genuinely surprises and fascinates children aged 7–10 - and exploring it through hands-on experimentation, culminating in the ultimate challenge of building a foil boat and loading it with as much weight as possible before it sinks, is one of the most engaging science activities there is. This is real physics, explored through real experimentation, with genuinely exciting results.

Why This Activity Works

Children this age are ready to move beyond observation into genuine scientific understanding - why does something float? The concept of density - that it's not weight but the ratio of weight to volume that determines whether something sinks or floats - is a beautiful, counterintuitive idea that lands very well at this age.

The boat building challenge introduces engineering thinking, and the loading experiment teaches about weight distribution and structural integrity. Recording results and drawing conclusions develops proper scientific literacy.

Activity Details

Age Range: 7 – 10 years

Time: 1–2 hours

Mess Level: Wet! Do this outside or on a large tray 💧

Supervision: Nearby supervision

What You'll Need

  • A large clear tub or bowl of water

  • A collection of objects in different materials and weights for initial testing

  • Sheets of aluminium foil for boat building

  • A collection of small weights — coins work perfectly

  • A science notebook for recording results and hypotheses

  • Optional: food colouring to make the water more visible and fun

  • Optional: a kitchen scale for measuring

How To Do It

Part 1 — Explore Density:

  1. Test a collection of objects - predict then test each one.

  2. Record results in the science notebook.

  3. Discuss why - introduce the concept of density. Objects denser than water sink, less dense objects float.

  4. Try the mystery liquid experiment - does an object behave differently in salt water vs fresh water? Add 4 tablespoons of salt to one container and compare.

  5. Record observations - what changed? Why?

Part 2 — The Boat Building Challenge:

  1. Give each child one sheet of aluminium foil - same size for everyone.

  2. The challenge: design and fold a boat that will hold as many coins as possible before sinking.

  3. Allow 10 minutes to design and build.

  4. Test the boats - add coins one at a time, recording how many each boat holds.

  5. Examine which design held the most - why? What made it stronger?

  6. Allow redesign time - can they improve their boat based on what they learned?

  7. Test again - did the redesign improve performance?

Part 3 — Record and Conclude:

  1. Write up the experiment properly - hypothesis, method, results, conclusion.

  2. Draw the winning boat design with labels.

  3. Answer the big question - why does a heavy metal ship float?

Kim's Tips 💕

  • Salt water vs fresh water is a genuinely surprising experiment - objects float higher in salt water, which fascinates children and adults alike.

  • The boat redesign round is where the real learning happens - the first attempt is instinct, the second is engineering.

  • Coins are perfect weights because they're identical - easy to count and compare fairly.

  • Wide, shallow boat designs hold more weight than tall narrow ones - but let children discover this themselves rather than telling them!

  • This is a wonderful activity for grandchildren on a longer visit - setting up a proper science lab at the kitchen table, with labelled ingredients and a proper notebook, makes children feel genuinely like scientists.

  • The question "why does a huge ship float?" is a beautiful discussion to have - look up Archimedes together afterwards for a wonderful history of science moment.
