Friendship Bracelet Making

Friendship Bracelet Making

TWEENS (11 - 14 YEARS)

8/25/20262 min read

Friendship bracelets have been around forever - and for good reason. There's something so lovely about sitting together, choosing colours, learning the knots and creating something that carries meaning. Whether your tween makes one to keep or one to give away, this activity is all about connection and creativity.

It's also wonderfully screen-free and surprisingly absorbing. Once you start, it's very hard to stop.

Why This Works

At this age, friendships are everything to tweens. Making friendship bracelets gives them something tangible to express those connections - and the focus required to learn the knotting patterns is a wonderful mindfulness exercise without it feeling like one. It also builds fine motor skills and patience in the most enjoyable way.

Activity Details

Age Group: Tweens 11–14

Time: 45–60 minutes

Difficulty: Easy–Medium

What You Need

  • Embroidery thread in a variety of colours

  • Scissors

  • Tape or safety pin to anchor the bracelet

  • Clipboard or firm surface to work on

Steps

  1. Choose 4–6 colours of embroidery thread. Cut each strand to approximately 60cm.

  2. Hold all strands together, fold in half and tie a knot at the fold, leaving a small loop.

  3. Anchor the loop to a clipboard or tape to a flat surface.

  4. Separate the threads and arrange your colours in the order you'd like them to appear.

  5. Start with the far left thread and make a forward knot over each thread moving to the right.

  6. When you reach the right side, start again from the left with the next thread.

  7. Continue knotting rows until your bracelet reaches the desired length.

  8. Tie off the end with a knot and trim the threads, leaving enough to tie around the wrist.
