Gratitude Stones Christmas Centrepiece

December can get a little busy, can’t it? Between shopping, wrapping and trying to remember where you put the sticky tape, it’s lovely to have an activity that gives everyone a chance to slow down.

These gratitude stones are a simple way to bring a little thoughtfulness to your Christmas table. Each person chooses one word that represents something they’re thankful for, then writes it on a smooth stone. Gather the stones in a bowl or tray, and you have a meaningful centrepiece made by the people sharing your Christmas.

The words don’t need to be grand or serious. “Home”, “laughter”, “friends” or even “pancakes” might be just right! A word like “Tuesdays” could mean a weekly visit with someone special. It’s the little story behind the word that makes each stone personal.

Best Ages: All ages, with help for younger children
Time Needed: 20–30 minutes, plus drying time
Difficulty: Easy
Repeats Yearly? Yes - keep your stones and add new ones each Christmas

What You Need

  • Smooth, flat stones with enough room for a word; craft-store stones are handy, or collect suitable ones where permitted

  • Acrylic paint markers or paint pens suitable for stone

  • A soft cloth to clean and dry the stones

  • Scrap paper for practising your words

  • A shallow bowl or wooden tray for displaying the finished stones

  • Optional: a clear sealant suitable for painted stone, if you’d like extra protection

How To

1. Get your stones ready.
Wash off any dirt or grit, then let the stones dry completely. Give them a final wipe with a soft cloth before you begin. Choose the flattest side for your word so it’s easier to write and read.

2. Think of one thing you’re grateful for.
Give everyone a quiet minute to choose their word. You could ask, “What made you smile this year?” or “What is something you’re really glad to have in your life?”

One word keeps it simple, but there’s no need to turn it into a rule anyone worries about. Help younger children choose a word, or let them draw a little picture instead.

3. Practise, then write on the stone.
Try your word on scrap paper first, especially if it’s a long one. Use clear, simple lettering and a colour that stands out against the stone. An adult can write a younger child’s word while they add dots, a heart or a little decoration.

Leave some of the natural stone showing if you like - these don’t need to be perfectly painted to look lovely together.

4. Leave the paint to dry.
Set the stones somewhere they won’t be knocked or stacked together. Follow your paint pen’s drying instructions, and allow extra time before handling or sealing them. Making them the day before your gathering gives you a little breathing room.

5. Add a protective finish if you wish.
Sealant is optional for an indoor display. If you use one, check that it’s suitable for your paint and stones, and follow the product’s instructions. An adult should handle this step, with spray products used in a well ventilated area away from children.

6. Make your Christmas centrepiece.
Arrange the dry stones in a shallow bowl or tray where the words can be seen. Place it in the middle of the table, ready for everyone to enjoy.

During your meal, invite anyone who wants to share the story behind their word. There’s no pressure to speak - sometimes choosing and making the stone is enough.

♥ Kim’s Tip

Keep the stones together and bring them out each Christmas, adding a few new ones every year. Write the year and each person’s name or initials underneath before sealing, if you wish.

A few Christmases down the track, you’ll have a lovely collection of little reminders of what mattered to your family along the way.
