Hand Lettering & Calligraphy
There is something deeply special about beautiful handwriting
TWEENS (11 - 14 YEARS)

In a world where everything is typed, there is something deeply special about beautiful handwriting. Hand lettering and calligraphy are skills that tweens can learn relatively quickly - and once they do, they'll use them everywhere. Cards, journals, artwork, gifts. It becomes a superpower.
This is a wonderfully calm, creative afternoon activity that produces results your tween will be genuinely proud of.
Why This Works
Hand lettering appeals to the tween desire for self-expression and identity. It's also a skill that feels mature and impressive - something that sets them apart. The focused, repetitive practice required is quietly mindful, and the progress from first attempts to polished letters is rapid and deeply satisfying.
Activity Details
Age Group: Tweens 11–14
Time: 60–90 minutes
Difficulty: Easy–Medium
What You Need
Brush pens in a variety of sizes (fine and broad)
Practice paper or dotted/grid paper
Pencil for sketching layouts
Ruler
Optional: lightpad for tracing practice sheets
Steps
Start by practising basic strokes - thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes are the foundation of brush lettering.
Work through the alphabet one letter at a time, focusing on consistent pressure and rhythm.
Once comfortable with individual letters, practise connecting them into words.
Experiment with different styles - bouncy lettering, classic calligraphy, modern minimalist.
Choose a favourite quote, name or phrase to letter as a finished piece.
Sketch the layout lightly in pencil first, then go over with your brush pen.
Allow to dry completely, then erase any pencil lines.
Kim's Tips 💕
The key is thin up, thick down - press harder on the downstroke and lighter on the upstroke
Practice sheets are available free online and are brilliant for beginners
Try lettering a friend's name as a birthday card - such a beautiful personalised gift
