There are certain things you do with a small child that you think you'll remember forever - and then realise later you almost forgot.

A handprint is different. A handprint stays. It captures something so fleeting, so perfectly small, that it becomes one of those treasures you return to again and again across the years. This simple craft is genuinely one of the most meaningful things you can make with a baby or young toddler, and the materials list couldn't be simpler. Paint, paper, a tiny hand - and a moment you'll keep forever.

Why This Activity Works for Little Ones

For babies, handprint art is a beautifully passive sensory experience - the cool paint on their palm, the gentle pressing, the interesting sensation of a different texture. For toddlers, it becomes more intentional - they begin to recognise their own handprint and feel genuine pride in their creation. As a keepsake it's unmatched - a dated handprint from each year becomes one of the most treasured records of a child's growth.

Activity Details

Age Range: Newborn – 3 years

Time: 15–20 minutes

Mess Level: Mild - have wipes ready! 🎨

Supervision: Active supervision - especially for babies

What You'll Need

  • Washable, non-toxic paint in chosen colours

  • Thick white or cream card or watercolour paper

  • A small foam roller or brush to apply paint evenly

  • Baby wipes or a damp cloth for quick cleanup

  • A pen to write the date, age and name once dry

  • Optional: a frame ready to go!

How To Do It

  1. Lay paper on a flat, protected surface.

  2. Apply a thin, even layer of paint to baby's palm using a foam roller — not too thick.

  3. Gently but firmly press the painted hand onto the paper, holding each finger down.

  4. Lift straight up carefully to avoid smudging.

  5. Clean baby's hand immediately with a damp cloth or baby wipes.

  6. Allow to dry completely — at least an hour.

  7. Write the child's name, age and date in pencil or fine pen beneath the print.

  8. Frame it, gift it, or add to a yearly collection.

Tips 💕

  • A foam roller gives a much more even paint coverage than a brush — worth having one specifically for this.

  • Do several prints in one session — some will be better than others and it's lovely to have options.

  • Date every single one. Future you will be so grateful.

  • A set of yearly handprints in matching frames is one of the most beautiful gifts for parents or grandparents.

  • For newborns, use an ink pad designed for babies rather than paint — far easier to manage with tiny curled fists.
