Herb Garden Planting
Little hands in soil, big hearts full of wonder
TODDLER CRAFTS AND CONNECTION
6/18/20263 min read

If you've never planted seeds with a toddler, you are in for one of the loveliest surprises. There is something about pressing a tiny seed into soil and patting it down with chubby little fingers that is deeply satisfying for small people - and for the grown-ups watching them.
This simple herb garden activity is wonderful because it doesn't end when the visit does. That little pot of seeds goes home, gets watered carefully every day, and slowly - magically - something green appears. The pride on a child's face when they show you their seedling on your next video call is absolutely priceless. It's gardening, yes - but really it's about patience, wonder and the magic of watching something grow.
Why This Activity Works for Little Ones
Toddlers are natural scientists - endlessly curious about how things work and where things come from. Planting connects them to the natural world in a hands-on, sensory way that no screen ever could. The soil texture, the smell, the weight of the watering can - every part of this activity is rich with sensory experience.
It also teaches patience and care in the gentlest possible way, and gives children a sense of real responsibility. Herbs like basil, chives and parsley sprout quickly, which is perfect for keeping little ones engaged with visible results.
Activity Details
Age Range: 2 โ 5 years
Time: 30 minutes to set up, then ongoing!
Mess Level: Mild - have a dustpan handy ๐ฑ
Supervision: Active supervision for the planting part
What You'll Need
Small terracotta or plastic pots (one per child is lovely)
Easy herb seeds โ basil, chives, or parsley are perfect starters
A small trowel or spoon for scooping soil
A tray to contain the mess
How To Do It
Set everything up on a tray or outside on a table - lay down newspaper if you'd like to protect the surface.
Let toddlers scoop potting mix into their pot using a small trowel or large spoon. This part alone will absorb them for a good while!
Use a finger to poke small holes in the soil - little ones love this step.
Drop 2โ3 seeds into each hole and cover gently with soil.
Pat the soil down firmly with small hands - very satisfying!
Water gently together using the little watering can.
Write their name on a craft stick and press it into the pot - their very own garden label.
Place in a sunny spot and send home with care instructions written in the child's "voice" - so sweet to read together.
Kim's Tips ๐
Basil is a brilliant starter herb - it sprouts within a week, which is just the right timeframe for keeping toddler excitement alive.
Write simple care instructions on a card to send home with the pot - "Water me a little every day and put me in the sunshine!"
Take a photo of the child with their pot to send to parents - it becomes a beautiful keepsake.
When grandchildren visit, start a pot together and keep one at your place too - you can compare growth on your next video call!
A child-sized watering can is a worthwhile investment - they will use it endlessly.
