Homemade Dumplings & Gyoza
Homemade Dumplings & Gyoza
TWEENS (11 - 14 YEARS)
8/26/20262 min read

There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of folding your first dumpling. It takes a little practice, but once your tween gets the hang of it, they won't be able to stop - and the result is a plate of homemade dumplings that tastes a hundred times better than takeaway.
This is a wonderful activity for an afternoon in the kitchen together, and it's one that brings out so much creativity and concentration.
Why This Works
Dumplings are a beautiful mix of technique and creativity - tweens love the challenge of folding, the freedom to experiment with fillings and the pride of a plate that genuinely looks impressive. It also opens up a conversation about Chinese and Japanese food culture, which ties in beautifully with the Creating Calm Chaos Around the World Night activity.
Activity Details
Age Group: Tweens 11–14
Time: 60–75 minutes
Difficulty: Medium
Serves: 4
What You Need
30 round dumpling wrappers (store bought is perfectly fine!)
300g pork mince (or chicken, prawn or vegetarian filling)
2 cups finely shredded cabbage
2 spring onions, finely chopped
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
1 clove garlic, minced
Vegetable oil for pan frying
Dipping sauce: soy sauce, rice vinegar & chilli oil
Steps
Mix mince, cabbage, spring onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger and garlic together until well combined.
Place a wrapper on a clean surface. Add a teaspoon of filling to the centre.
Dip your finger in water and run it around the edge of the wrapper.
Fold in half and press to seal, then pleat the edge by folding small sections over each other.
Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.
Heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add dumplings flat side down and cook for 2–3 minutes until golden.
Add ¼ cup water to the pan, cover immediately and steam for 4–5 minutes until cooked through.
Serve with dipping sauce.
Kim's Tips 💕
Watch a quick YouTube video on pleating together - it makes it so much easier!
Don't overfill - a teaspoon of filling is plenty
Make a big batch and freeze half for later - they cook from frozen perfectly
A bamboo steamer is wonderful for this - find one on my Amazon storefront!
