The Kindness Rocks Project started with a simple idea - paint a rock, leave it somewhere for a stranger to find, and brighten their day. What grew from that idea is a worldwide movement of small painted stones left on park benches, garden walls, library steps and forest paths - each one a tiny, unexpected gift from one person to another. For children aged 7–10, discovering this idea for the first time is genuinely moving. The thought that something they made with their own hands could make a complete stranger smile - and that they'll never know who found it - is a lesson in generosity that lands very differently at this age than almost anything else.
Why This Activity Works for Kids Aged 7–10
Kindness Rocks combines creative skill with genuine purpose - and that combination is enormously powerful for this age group. Children between seven and ten are developing real empathy and a sense of their place in the wider community, and an act of anonymous generosity speaks directly to that development. The painting itself - detailed designs, careful lettering, considered colour choices - is well matched to their growing fine motor capability and artistic confidence. And the act of placing the rock somewhere and walking away, knowing it will be found, teaches something beautiful about giving without expectation of recognition.

Age Range: 7 – 10 years
Time: 1–2 hours painting + an outing to leave them

What You'll Need
Smooth, flat rocks - collected from a beach, garden or purchased from a craft shop
Acrylic paint in multiple colours
Fine paintbrushes in several sizes
A white base coat (optional but gives much more vivid colour)
Waterproof sealant spray or Mod Podge to protect the finished design
A permanent marker for adding fine details or words
Old clothes and a protected surface
How To Do It
Collect or buy smooth flat rocks - the smoother the surface the better the result.
Apply a white base coat and allow to dry completely - this makes colours much more vibrant.
Plan the design - a simple sketch on paper first helps enormously.
Paint the base colour and allow to dry before adding detail layers.
Add fine details with a small brush or permanent marker - patterns, words, small illustrations.
Allow to dry completely then seal with waterproof sealant - this is essential for rocks left outdoors.
Choose where to leave them - a park, a library garden, a café doorstep, a community noticeboard.
Leave them and walk away - resisting the urge to watch who finds them is part of the lesson!
Kim's Tips 💕
A white base coat makes an enormous difference to the vibrancy of the finished rock - don't skip it.
Words are often more powerful than images - "you've got this," "you are enough," "today is going to be a good day" - simple messages land beautifully on a painted stone.
Sealing is essential if rocks will be left outdoors - without it the paint will fade and chip quickly.
Photograph each finished rock before leaving it - children love having a record of their creations.
This is a wonderful activity for grandchildren on a visit - going out together to secretly leave rocks in a park is one of those experiences that feels genuinely special and meaningful.
