There's a reason threading activities have been a childhood favourite for generations - they are quietly, completely absorbing. A toddler with a good threading board will sit still longer than you ever thought possible, tongue slightly out in concentration, utterly focused on the task at hand. Giant threading boards and oversized lacing beads are perfect for little hands that are still developing their fine motor skills, and the sense of achievement when they thread a whole sequence is genuinely wonderful to witness. Simple, screen-free, and endlessly satisfying for everyone involved.

Why This Activity Works for Little Ones

Threading activities are brilliant for developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and concentration - all the building blocks for writing and other learning down the track. The oversized format means it's achievable and satisfying for even the youngest toddlers, and the repetitive, rhythmic nature of threading is beautifully calming. It's also a wonderful activity to do side by side - sitting together quietly, each working on your own threading, is one of those simple moments that feels very peaceful and connected.

Activity Details

Age Range: 2 – 5 years

Time: 20–45 minutes

Mess Level: No mess at all ✨

Supervision: Nearby supervision recommended

What You'll Need

  • A wooden lacing or threading board (animals, shapes and flowers are all lovely)

  • Oversized threading beads with chunky laces

  • A flat surface to work on

  • Small bowls to sort beads by colour (optional — adds an extra layer of fun!)

How To Do It

  1. Set up the threading board or lay out the beads on the table in front of your toddler.

  2. Show them how to thread the lace through the first hole - then hand it over and let them take it from there.

  3. If using beads, let little ones sort them into small bowls by colour first - this is its own satisfying activity before the threading even begins!

  4. Sit alongside and do your own threading if you have two boards - parallel play is wonderfully calming for toddlers.

  5. Celebrate each completed thread with genuine enthusiasm - it matters enormously to them!

  6. For older toddlers, introduce a simple colour pattern to follow for an extra challenge.

Kim's Tips 💕

  • Start with a board that has large, well-spaced holes - success early on keeps little ones motivated.

  • Threading beads in a colour pattern is a beautiful introduction to sequencing and early maths thinking.

  • Keep a dedicated threading basket that only comes out for special quiet time - it stays exciting that way.

  • When the grandchildren visit, a new threading board makes a wonderful small gift that gets used again and again.

  • This is a perfect activity for the wind-down before quiet time or bed.
