Lino printing is one of those crafts that feels genuinely professional - and that's exactly why tweens love it. You carve your own design into a soft lino block, ink it up and press it onto paper or fabric to create a print that is completely, beautifully unique.
The process is meditative, the results are stunning and the skills learned here last a lifetime.
Why This Works
Lino printing requires planning, patience and precision - all qualities that tweens are developing at this age. It also produces a result that feels genuinely artistic and impressive, which builds real creative confidence. And because every print is slightly different, there's a wonderful element of surprise in each one.
Activity Details
Age Group: Tweens 11–14
Time: 90 minutes
Difficulty: Medium
What You Need
Soft lino block or easy-cut printing block
Lino cutting tools (with adult supervision)
Water-based printing ink or acrylic paint
Brayer (small roller)
Paper or fabric to print on
Pencil for sketching design
Tray or flat surface for inking
Steps
Sketch your design onto paper first, keeping it bold and simple - fine details are difficult to carve.
Transfer your design onto the lino block using a pencil, pressing firmly.
Using lino cutting tools, carefully carve away the areas that you want to remain white (the raised areas will print).
Roll a thin, even layer of ink across the surface of the lino block using the brayer.
Press your paper or fabric firmly onto the inked block, applying even pressure across the whole surface.
Carefully peel back to reveal your print.
Allow to dry completely, then repeat for a series of prints.
