There's something so wonderful about watching a little one discover colour for the first time. The way their eyes light up, the concentration on their tiny face, the absolute delight when two colours merge into something new. The only thing that can dampen that joy is the cleanup afterwards! This mess-free sensory painting activity gives toddlers all the creative magic of painting without a single drop ending up on your walls, carpet, or favourite top. It's one of those activities that feels like a proper secret - and once you try it, you'll wonder why you ever did it any other way.

Why This Activity Works for Little Ones

Toddlers are sensory explorers by nature. They learn through touching, squishing, and manipulating things with their hands. This activity delivers all of that in a completely contained way. The zip-lock bag becomes a little window into a world of colour, and little ones can push, swirl and mix to their heart's content. It's also beautifully calming - the gentle pressure of moving paint through the bag has a wonderfully soothing quality that makes it perfect for busy or overstimulated toddlers. When the grandchildren come to visit, this is one of those activities you can set up in five minutes and it will keep everyone happily occupied for a good stretch of time.

What You'll Need

How To Do It

  1. Slide a piece of white card or paper inside the zip-lock bag - this gives the colours something to show up against beautifully.

  2. Squeeze a generous dollop of 2–3 paint colours into the bag. Keep them separate at first so little ones can discover the mixing themselves.

  3. Seal the bag firmly. Run a strip of tape along the top edge for extra security if you'd like.

  4. Lay flat on a table or tape to a window (the light coming through is magical!).

  5. Let your toddler push, swirl, and explore with their fingers, palms and fists.

  6. Watch the wonder unfold - and enjoy it yourself too!

Kim's Tips 💕

  • Taping the bag to a window is absolutely magical - the light makes the colours glow like stained glass.

  • Use primary colours (red, yellow, blue) so toddlers discover secondary colours through mixing - a lovely little learning moment.

  • If you have a light box, lay the bag on top for an extra-special sensory experience.

  • This is a wonderful quiet-time activity before naps or after a big busy morning.

  • When grandchildren come to visit, set up a bag for each child in different colour combinations — they love comparing their creations!
