There is something completely magical about transforming an ordinary evening into a proper movie night experience - with real tickets, a popcorn station, a little lolly stand and all the ceremony of a real cinema.

For children aged 7–10, the preparation is just as exciting as the movie itself - designing the tickets, setting up the snack station, choosing the film, dimming the lights. This is connection disguised as pure fun, and the memories made on a properly set-up movie night last a very long time.

Why This Activity Works for Kids Aged 7–10

Movie nights that involve preparation and ritual are so much richer than simply pressing play. The creative tasks — designing tickets, making popcorn, setting up the lolly stand - give children agency and investment in the experience.

And watching a film together as a shared experience, rather than on separate devices, creates genuine connection through shared emotion - laughing together, gasping together, getting a little teary together. This is what screens are for at their very best.

Age Range: 7 – 10 years (and everyone!)

What You'll Need

For the tickets:

Card or thick paper
Markers, stamps or a simple ticket template
Scissors

For the popcorn:

Popcorn kernels and a pot or popcorn maker
Butter and salt for classic, or toppings of choice
Popcorn boxes or paper bags

For the lolly stand:

A selection of favourite sweets in small bowls
Little paper bags for scooping
A hand-written menu sign

For the cinema experience:

Blankets and cushions
Dimmed lights
The chosen film!

How To Do It

Choose the film together - let children have real input into the selection.
Design and make the movie tickets - include the film name, date, seat number and a small illustration.
Set up the snack station - popcorn maker or pot, bowls of lollies, drinks.
Make the popcorn together just before the movie starts.
"Sell" the tickets at the door and escort guests to their seats.
Turn the lights down and start the film.
Enjoy interval if it's a long movie - refill snacks and discuss the plot so far.
End with hot chocolate and a movie review - best character, funniest moment, best scene.

A popcorn maker is a brilliant investment - the sound and smell is completely cinematic and children love operating it themselves.
Set up the lolly stand with a little handwritten menu and small paper bags for scooping - children take this very seriously!
This is a wonderful activity for grandchildren on a visit - choosing a film that both generations will enjoy is its own sweet challenge.
Keep the tickets in the memory jar - a movie ticket from a special night is a lovely thing to find at the end of the year.
