This is one of my absolute favourite activities because it costs nothing, requires no special equipment and produces the most breathtaking results. The rule is simple: collect only fallen things. Leaves, sticks, seeds, petals, feathers. Then use them to create something extraordinary.

Mandalas. Animals. Portraits. Abstract patterns. The natural world becomes your palette.

Why This Works

In a world of screens and noise, this activity brings tweens back to something quiet and deeply satisfying. There's a wonderful mindfulness to collecting and arranging natural materials - and the creativity required to see a portrait in a collection of leaves and sticks is genuinely impressive. It also connects them to the natural world in a meaningful way.

Activity Details

Age Group: Tweens 11–14

Time: 60–90 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

What You Need

  • A garden, park or bushland to collect from

  • A flat surface to arrange on (grass, pavement or a large board)

  • Camera or phone to photograph the finished creation

  • Optional: glue and paper to make a permanent piece

Steps

  1. Head outside and spend 15–20 minutes collecting only fallen natural materials - leaves, sticks, seeds, flowers, feathers, bark.

  2. Find a flat surface to work on and lay out your collection.

  3. Choose what you'd like to create - a mandala, an animal, a portrait or an abstract pattern.

  4. Begin arranging your materials, working from the centre outward for mandalas or building up your image piece by piece.

  5. Refine and adjust until you're happy with the result.

  6. Photograph your creation before it blows away - these images are stunning!

  7. Optional: glue materials onto paper or card to make a permanent piece.

Kim's Tips 💕

  • Search "land art Andy Goldsworthy" for beautiful inspiration before you start

  • The photograph is the artwork - don't worry about keeping it!

  • Try creating a mandala first - the symmetry is very satisfying and forgiving

  • A macro lens clip for your phone captures the most incredible detail
