What if you could spend an afternoon inside the mind of Van Gogh, Monet or Frida Kahlo? This activity does exactly that - and it's one of the most creatively rich things you can do with a tween. Choose an artist, study their style, then create your own version of their most famous works.

The results are always surprising, always beautiful and always completely unique.

Why This Works

Tweens at this age are developing their own sense of identity and self-expression - and art is one of the most powerful ways to explore that. Learning about famous artists also connects them to history, culture and the stories behind the paintings. And there is something deeply satisfying about completing a painting inspired by a master.

Activity Details

Age Group: Tweens 11–14

Time: 2–3 hours

Difficulty: Medium

What You Need

Suggested Artists & Works
  • Van Gogh - Starry Night (swirling night skies)

  • Monet - Water Lilies (soft, blurred impressionist style)

  • Picasso - Self Portrait (cubist, geometric faces)

  • Frida Kahlo - Self Portrait (bold colours, floral details)

Steps

  1. Choose your artist and find a reference image of their most famous work.

  2. Spend 10 minutes looking at the artwork together - notice the colours, brushstrokes and style.

  3. Lightly sketch the basic composition onto your canvas or paper.

  4. Begin blocking in the main colours, working from background to foreground.

  5. Build up layers, focusing on capturing the artist's unique style rather than a perfect copy.

  6. Add details and finishing touches.

  7. Sign your artwork and display it proudly!

Kim's Tips 💕

  • This is not about perfection - it's about style and expression, just like the artists themselves!

  • Try Van Gogh's Starry Night for a first attempt - the swirling technique is very forgiving

  • Frame the finished artwork- it makes a beautiful keepsake or gift

  • A quality acrylic paint set makes such a difference - find one on my Amazon storefront!
