A puppet theatre project is one of those genuinely ambitious creative undertakings that children aged 7–10 rise to completely. This isn't just making a puppet - it's building a theatre, designing a cast of characters, writing a story, rehearsing and then performing to a live audience. It's a multi-day project that touches creative writing, visual art, construction, performance and collaboration all at once. And the performance at the end - with a proper audience, proper applause and proper curtain calls - is one of those childhood experiences that stays.
Why This Activity Works
A puppet theatre project develops an extraordinary range of skills. Construction of the theatre involves spatial thinking, problem-solving and basic engineering. Designing and making puppets develops fine motor skills and artistic decision-making.
Writing the script introduces narrative structure, dialogue and character development. And performing develops confidence, communication and the ability to project and engage an audience. It also rewards sustained effort over multiple sessions - a genuinely valuable lesson at this age.

What You'll Need
For the theatre:
A large cardboard box - a wardrobe or appliance box is perfect
Craft knife (adult only) for cutting the stage opening
Paint and decorating supplies for the exterior
Fabric or ribbon for curtains
String lights for footlights (optional but magical!)
For the puppets:
Wooden spoons or paddle pop sticks for stick puppets
Felt, fabric scraps and craft supplies
Googly eyes, wool, buttons
PVA glue and scissors
Paper mâché materials for more ambitious puppet heads (optional)
For the show:
A simple script - written together
A programme - designed and printed or handwritten
An audience - family, friends, anyone who will sit still!
How To Do It
Session 1 - Build the Theatre:
Cut a large rectangular opening in the front of the box - this is the stage. Adults handle the craft knife.
Paint and decorate the exterior - the theatre name, decorative details, a marquee.
Hang fabric curtains inside the opening using string or tape.
Add footlights along the bottom edge if desired.
Session 2 - Make the Puppets:
Design the characters on paper first - who is in the story?
Make stick puppets by drawing and cutting characters from card and attaching to sticks.
For felt hand puppets, cut basic shapes and glue or sew together.
Add details - googly eyes, yarn hair, fabric clothing.
Session 3 - Write the Script and Rehearse:
Decide on the story together - keep it simple: a problem, an adventure, a resolution.
Write dialogue for each character.
Rehearse - read through the script, practise moving puppets expressively.
Design and make the programme.
Performance Day:
Set up the audience seating.
Dim the lights if possible.
Take a bow - then let the show begin!
Kim's Tips 💕
A wardrobe box is the perfect puppet theatre - tall enough to kneel behind comfortably and wide enough for two performers.
String lights along the bottom of the stage opening create the most beautiful footlight effect.
Keep the script short - 5–10 minutes is perfect for a first show. The audience will want more, not less.
A printed programme makes the audience feel like they're at a real theatre - children take enormous pride in making these.
This is an absolutely beautiful activity for grandchildren on a longer visit - performing a puppet show for the whole family at the end of a holiday is one of those memories that everyone talks about afterwards.
A simple video recording of the performance is one of the most treasured keepsakes imaginable.
