Rainbow Walking Water
Watch the colours walk — slowly, magically, impossibly
EARLY CHILDHOOD ACTIVITIES
8/28/20262 min read

There are science activities that produce a reaction in children, and then there is the walking water experiment - which produces something closer to genuine awe.
The idea is almost too simple to believe: fill cups with coloured water, connect them with strips of paper towel, and then wait. Slowly - almost impossibly - the coloured water begins to travel up through the paper towel and down into the empty cups beside it. And when two colours meet in the middle and blend into something new, the faces of watching children are absolutely extraordinary.
This is magic that is also science, and at age four to six that combination is completely irresistible.
Why This Activity Works
The walking water experiment delivers something that very few activities can - a result that unfolds slowly enough to watch, dramatically enough to gasp at, and beautifully enough to remember.
For children aged 4–6, the colour mixing moment - when yellow and blue meet to make green, when red and yellow become orange - is a genuine revelation. The waiting involved teaches patience in the most compelling possible way, because the reward for waiting is visible and building the whole time. And the result - a rainbow of colours in cups across the table - is simply beautiful.
Activity Details
Age Range: 4 – 6 years
Time: 10 minutes setup + 30–60 minutes watching
Mess Level: Mild - food colouring can stain, protect the surface! 🌈
Supervision: Nearby supervision
What You'll Need
7 clear cups or glasses — clear is essential so children can see the water level changing
Water
Food colouring in red, yellow and blue
Paper towel — cut into strips long enough to drape between cups
A protected surface — food colouring stains!
Optional: a white tray underneath to catch any drips and show the colours beautifully
How To Do It
Set out 7 cups in a row.
Fill cups 1, 3, 5 and 7 with water - leave cups 2, 4 and 6 empty.
Add food colouring to the filled cups - red to cup 1, yellow to cup 3, blue to cup 5, red to cup 7.
Fold paper towel strips lengthways into thin strips.
Drape one strip between each pair of adjacent cups - one end in the coloured water, one end in the empty cup beside it.
Now - wait and watch! 🌈
After 30–60 minutes the colours will have walked into the empty cups and begun to mix.
Check back every 10 minutes and watch the progress together.
After a few hours the rainbow will be complete!
Kim's Tips 💕
Clear cups are absolutely essential - half the magic is watching the water level rise and fall through the glass.
The colour mixing cups are the most exciting moment - set up so red and yellow meet in one empty cup and yellow and blue meet in another for a perfect rainbow.
Take photos every 15–20 minutes to create a time-lapse record of the experiment - children love looking back at the sequence.
Do this first thing in the morning so children can check on it throughout the day - the anticipation and repeated checking is part of the joy.
This is a wonderful activity for grandchildren on a visit - setting it up together in the morning and returning to it all day builds beautiful shared anticipation.
