Road Trip Essentials When You're Bringing the Grandkids Home

There’s something special about hearing, “The grandkids are coming to stay!”

There’s also something special about hearing, “Are we there yet?” for the seventeenth time before you've even reached the halfway point.

Whether you're picking the grandkids up for a weekend visit, helping out during school holidays, or taking them on a family adventure, a little preparation can make the journey much smoother for everyone involved.

Over the years, I've learned that the difference between a stressful car trip and an enjoyable one often comes down to having the right things packed and within easy reach.

Here are some of my favourite road trip essentials when I'm travelling with grandkids.

1. A Travel Activity Tray

A travel activity tray quickly becomes mission control for little travellers.

It gives kids a stable surface for colouring, drawing, sticker books, snacks, and small toys without everything ending up on the floor every five minutes.

Many trays also include side pockets, making it easy to keep favourite items close at hand.

2. Reusable Water Bottles

Children always seem to get thirsty at the most inconvenient times.

Having a spill-resistant reusable water bottle within reach helps keep everyone hydrated and reduces the number of emergency stops.

I like bottles that are easy for little hands to open independently.

3. Mess-Free Activity Books

Activity books are road trip gold.

Look for options such as:

  • Water-reveal books

  • Magic colouring books

  • Sticker books

  • Puzzle books

  • Reusable drawing pads

They keep children occupied without creating a huge mess in the back seat.

4. Kid-Friendly Headphones

If screen time is part of your travel strategy, a good set of children's headphones can be a lifesaver.

They allow kids to enjoy audiobooks, music, educational apps, or movies without turning the car into a mobile cinema for everyone else.

5. Downloaded Movies and Shows

One lesson many grandparents learn the hard way is that mobile coverage isn't guaranteed.

Before leaving home, download a few favourite shows, movies, or educational programs to a tablet so entertainment is available even when the signal disappears.

6. Healthy Snacks

Never underestimate the power of snacks.

A small snack container stocked with easy-to-eat options can help prevent hunger-induced meltdowns and reduce requests to stop every thirty minutes.

Some road trip favourites include:

  • Crackers

  • Fruit

  • Cheese portions

  • Muesli bars

  • Dried fruit

7. A Travel Pillow and Lightweight Blanket

Long journeys often lead to naps.

A small travel pillow and lightweight blanket can help children settle comfortably and make it easier for them to rest while you're on the road.

8. An LCD Drawing Tablet

These reusable drawing tablets have become incredibly popular for good reason.

Kids can draw, write, play games, and doodle endlessly without needing paper, crayons, or markers.

They're lightweight, reusable, and take up very little space.

9. Audiobooks and Story Podcasts

Not every child wants screen time for an entire trip.

Audiobooks can be a wonderful alternative and often keep children entertained for much longer than expected.

They're also a great way to encourage a love of stories while travelling.

10. A Small Surprise Bag

This is one of my favourite road trip tricks.

Before the trip, put together a small bag containing a few inexpensive surprises such as:

Bringing out a new item every hour or two can make the journey feel much shorter for children.

11. Wet Wipes and Tissues

These may not be exciting, but they are essential.

Sticky fingers, snack spills, mystery messes, and unexpected accidents happen.

Wet wipes can save the day more times than you'll probably count.

12. A Spare Change of Clothes

Even on short trips, I always pack a spare outfit.

Spilled drinks, muddy stops, car sickness, and toilet accidents don't usually announce themselves in advance.

Having a backup set of clothes can make a stressful situation much easier to manage.

13. Comfort Toys

For younger children especially, bringing a familiar comfort item can make a huge difference.

A favourite teddy, blanket, or soft toy provides reassurance and helps children feel secure when they're away from home.

14. Portable Phone Charger

Between navigation, music, emergency calls, and entertaining grandkids, phones work hard during long journeys.

A portable charger ensures you don't find yourself running low on battery when you need it most.

15. Patience and Flexibility

This might be the most important road trip essential of all.

Some journeys go perfectly.

Others involve traffic jams, unexpected toilet stops, lost toys, spilled snacks, and changes of plan.

The best memories are rarely made when everything goes exactly as expected. They're made during the little moments in between.

Final Thoughts

Travelling with grandkids can be one of the most rewarding parts of being a grandparent. Yes, there may be snack requests, endless questions, and a few rounds of "Are we there yet?" along the way, but there will also be laughter, stories, and memories you'll both treasure for years to come.

A little preparation goes a long way, and having the right road trip essentials on hand can help make the journey more enjoyable for everyone.
