Sock puppets are one of those crafts that have been delighting children for generations - and for very good reason. The materials are humble, the technique is completely achievable, and the moment a child puts a finished sock puppet on their hand and gives it a voice for the first time is genuinely magical. There is something about a puppet - even a very simple one - that unlocks a particular kind of imaginative play that nothing else quite does. Children who were quiet become voluble. Children who were shy become bold. And the stories that come out of a sock puppet show are always, always surprising.
Why This Activity Works for Kids Aged 4–6
Sock puppets are perfectly matched to this age group - the making is simple enough to be completely achievable, but open-ended enough to allow real creative decision-making. Choosing the character, the colours, the features - every decision matters to a 4–6 year old and they make them with great seriousness. The puppet show that inevitably follows is pure imaginative play at its richest, and performing for an audience - even an audience of two - builds confidence and communication skills in the most natural, joyful way.

Time: 45 minutes making + open-ended play
Mess Level: Mild — glue and craft supplies 🎨
Supervision: Nearby supervision
What You'll Need
Old socks - one per puppet, any colour
Googly eyes in various sizes
Felt scraps for mouths, ears, hair and clothing details
PVA glue or a low-temp glue gun (adult operated)
Scissors
Wool or yarn for hair
Buttons, pompoms, pipe cleaners for extra details
A hand mirror so children can see their puppet in action
How To Do It
Slide the sock over your hand to get a feel for where features will go - the fold between fingers and thumb becomes the mouth.
Decide on the character - animal, monster, person, creature?
Cut felt shapes for the mouth lining - glue inside the fold for a proper talking mouth.
Glue googly eyes above the mouth - position matters! Try different spots before committing.
Add ears, hair, a nose, spots, stripes - whatever the character needs.
Allow glue to dry completely before using.
Put the puppet on and introduce it to the room - what's its name? What does it sound like?
Set up a simple puppet theatre - behind a sofa, under a table, or with a sheet hung between two chairs - and let the show begin!
Kim's Tips 💕
Make two or three puppets so there are enough characters for a proper story.
A hand mirror while making helps children position features in the right place.
Yarn hair cut to different lengths gives beautiful variety - long flowing locks, short spiky hair, a wild mane.
An adult making their own puppet alongside the child makes the puppet show so much more fun - children love performing to a puppet audience as much as a human one.
This is a perfect rainy day activity for grandchildren visiting - a puppet show performed for the family at the end is the most wonderful entertainment.
