Spiced Apple Butter
Apple butter has no butter in it at all. The name comes from how it spreads: smooth, thick and glossy, like a very soft butter, with a deep caramel colour that comes from long, slow cooking. It tastes like baked apples, cinnamon and cloves, and it makes the whole house smell like the best part of autumn.
The best bit is that you barely have to do anything. You chop the apples, tip everything into a slow cooker (or a covered dish in the oven), and let time do the work. It's a lower-sugar spread, so it lives in the fridge or freezer, which makes it a lovely fresh gift for people who'll use it up quickly on toast, porridge and pancakes.

Making It With the Kids/Grandkids
There's a lot of chopping here, but plenty for helpers who aren't near knives or hot pots.
• Ages 3 and up: wash the apples, and sniff and sprinkle the spices (already measured out by you).
• Ages 5 and up: toss the chopped apples with lemon juice, and tip them into the pot.
• Ages 6 and up: help peel the apples with a safe, grown up supervised peeler.
• Ages 8 and up: write the labels and decorate the jars with fabric and twine.
An adult does all the cutting, blending, hot cooking and jar filling.
