Stewed Pears with Cinnamon
Simple, gentle and naturally nourishing - ready in 20 minutes
5/17/20264 min read

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the most perfect ones.
These stewed pears take about 20 minutes from start to finish, use just a handful of ingredients and produce something genuinely beautiful - tender, silky soft pears in a warmly spiced golden syrup that smells absolutely incredible while it cooks.
Pears are one of the very best fruits for elderly parents. They're naturally soft even before cooking, gentle on digestion, high in fibre and have a mild sweetness that doesn't overwhelm. Stewed until completely tender they become almost spoonable - perfect for anyone with dental issues, swallowing difficulties or a sensitive digestive system.
This is the recipe I reach for when I want to give Mum something light, nourishing and genuinely lovely without spending much time in the kitchen at all.
Why This Recipe Works
Naturally soft and easy to eat - pears soften beautifully when stewed until completely tender
Aids digestion - pears are exceptionally high in soluble fibre which supports digestive health in elderly people
Naturally sweet - no refined sugar needed if using ripe pears, just a little honey
Anti-inflammatory - cinnamon has well documented anti-inflammatory properties particularly beneficial for elderly health
Gentle on sensitive stomachs - one of the most easily digested fruits available
Versatile - wonderful on their own, with custard, with yoghurt or alongside rice pudding
Ready in 20 minutes - one of the fastest recipes in the entire collection
Recipe Details
Serves: 4–6 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 15–20 minutes Freeze: Up to 3 months
Ingredients
6 medium ripe pears (any variety - Williams, Beurre Bosc or Packham all work beautifully)
2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
1 tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground ginger (optional but lovely)
Pinch of ground cloves (optional)
1 cup water or apple juice (apple juice gives a sweeter result)
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Juice of half a lemon (prevents browning and adds brightness)
Method
Step 1 - Prepare the pears Peel the pears using a vegetable peeler. Cut them in half lengthways and use a small spoon to scoop out the core and seeds. Cut each half into 3–4 even slices or leave in halves for a more rustic presentation. As you cut each pear squeeze a little lemon juice over them to prevent browning.
Step 2 - Make the spiced syrup In a medium saucepan combine the water or apple juice, honey, cinnamon, ginger if using, cloves if using and vanilla extract. Stir to combine and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
Step 3 - Add the pears Add the prepared pears to the simmering syrup. Stir gently to coat. The liquid should come about halfway up the pears — if not add a little more water.
Step 4 - Stew until tender Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently uncovered for 15–20 minutes, turning the pears gently once or twice during cooking, until completely tender when pierced with a knife. For elderly parents who need very soft food continue cooking for a further 5–10 minutes until the pears are almost falling apart. The cooking liquid will reduce and thicken into a beautiful golden syrup.
Step 5 - Taste and adjust Taste the syrup and add a little more honey if you would like it sweeter. Add a squeeze more lemon juice if it needs brightness.
Step 6 - Serve Serve warm in bowls with the golden syrup spooned over the top. Wonderful on their own or with any of the serving suggestions below.
Serving Suggestions

Freezing Instructions
Stewed pears freeze beautifully making them ideal for batch cooking:
Allow to cool completely in the syrup
Portion into small freezer containers including the syrup
Label with name and date
Freeze for up to 3 months
To reheat from frozen: Thaw overnight in the fridge. Reheat gently in a small saucepan over low heat until warmed through, or microwave on medium power for 60–90 seconds. Add a tiny splash of water if the syrup has thickened too much.
Kim's Tips
💕 Ripe pears give the best result - pears that are just ripe (slightly soft when pressed at the stem end) will cook quickly and become beautifully tender. Underripe pears take much longer and hard pears can remain firm even after stewing.
💕 Tinned pears work in a pinch - if fresh pears aren't available, tinned pears in juice are a perfectly good substitute. Drain them, skip steps 1 and 2, and simply warm them gently with the spices and a little honey for 5 minutes. Much quicker!
💕 The syrup is liquid gold - don't discard it. It's delicious drizzled over the pears, stirred into yoghurt or spooned over porridge. Make sure you include it when storing and serving.
💕 Make a big batch - this recipe scales up easily. Make double or triple and store in portions in the freezer. Having stewed fruit ready in the freezer means a proper homemade dessert or breakfast topping is always just minutes away.
💕 Other fruits work beautifully too - this same method works wonderfully with apples, quinces, peaches or apricots. Each fruit gives a slightly different but equally delicious result.
💕 Great for grandkids too - stewed pears with cinnamon are a beautiful first food for babies and toddlers and a nutritious snack for older children. The same pot that goes to Mum can go to the grandkids too. 😊
