Sticky Toffee Sauce
A Jar of Pudding Magic
Some gifts disappear before the wrapping paper hits the bin. This is one of them. A jar of glossy, buttery, caramel-brown toffee sauce is a joy to give, and an even bigger joy to pour over a warm pudding, a scoop of ice cream, a slice of apple pie or a bowl of porridge on a cold morning.
It's just butter, brown sugar and cream, simmered until thick, with a spoonful of dates if you'd like it extra sticky. It takes about twenty minutes. The only thing to remember is that melted sugar is very hot, so keep the children out of the kitchen while you cook.

Packaging and Gifting
• Jar: a 250 ml glass jar. This sauce is a rich brown, so it looks lovely in a clear jar.
• Decorate: a circle of brown paper or gingham fabric over the lid, tied with string, and a small wooden spoon tucked into the bow.
• Pair it with: a small steamed pudding, a jar of Brandy Butter, a bag of good vanilla ice cream cones, or a small jug for pouring.
Allergens: contains dairy (butter, cream). Dates and sugar are naturally free from the main allergens, but check your syrup and vanilla labels. Please label your gifts.
Handing it over: it needs to stay in the fridge. Don't leave it in a hot car.
Making It With the Grandkids
The cooking, the hot jars and the pouring are for adults only. Little helpers are best in the rest of the job.
• Ages 3 to 5: pick the ribbon, stick on labels and draw pictures on the gift tags.
• Ages 6 to 9: measure the cold ingredients before cooking starts, decorate the jar lids and tie on the ribbon once the jars are cool.
• Ages 8 and up: write the labels and gift tags, and warm a small spoonful in the microwave with an adult for the taste test.
• Keep children away from: the hot saucepan, the hot sugar and the hot jars, and the knives for chopping dates.
