There's something about sushi that feels a little bit fancy, a little bit adventurous - and tweens absolutely love it. The first time I made sushi rolls with my kids, there was more rice on the bench than on the nori, and we laughed until our sides hurt. That's the magic of this one. It's a kitchen activity that feels grown-up, creative and delicious all at once.

If your tween has been wanting to try something in the kitchen that goes beyond the basics, this is it. Rolling sushi together is one of those activities that builds real confidence - and the results are genuinely impressive.

Why This Works

At 11–14, tweens are craving experiences that make them feel capable and a little bit cool. Making sushi from scratch ticks every box - it involves technique, patience, creativity and a result they can actually show off. It also opens up a conversation about Japanese culture, food traditions and trying new flavours together.

Activity Details

Age Group: Tweens 11–14

Time: 60–90 minutes

Difficulty: Medium

Serves: 4

What You Need

Steps

  1. Cook sushi rice according to packet instructions. While warm, mix through a dressing of rice vinegar, sugar and salt. Allow to cool to room temperature.

  2. Place a sheet of nori shiny side down on the bamboo mat.

  3. With wet hands, spread a thin, even layer of rice over the nori, leaving a 2cm border at the top edge.

  4. Arrange your chosen fillings in a line across the centre of the rice.

  5. Using the mat, roll the nori tightly away from you, pressing gently as you go.

  6. Seal the edge with a little water and press to close.

  7. Using a sharp knife, slice into 8 even pieces. Wipe the knife between cuts for cleaner slices.

  8. Arrange on a plate and serve with soy sauce and wasabi.

Kim's Tips 💕

  • Wet hands are the secret to working with sushi rice - keep a bowl of water nearby!

  • Don't overfill - less is more when it comes to neat rolls

  • Let your tween choose their own fillings and make it their signature roll

  • A bamboo mat makes rolling so much easier - find one on my Amazon storefront!
