Teddy Bears Picnic
Every bear that ever there was - and the most magical afternoon tea
EARLY CHILDHOOD ACTIVITIES

There are certain childhood experiences that exist in a category all of their own - the ones that feel genuinely enchanted while they're happening and completely golden in memory afterwards.
A teddy bears picnic is one of those. The preparation is part of the magic - laying the blanket just so, setting tiny places for each bear, making the sandwiches and arranging the biscuits on the plate. And then sitting out in the garden or a park with a collection of beloved stuffed animals, pouring pretend tea and introducing bears by name - it is one of the loveliest, most unhurried afternoons imaginable.
Why This Activity Works for Kids Aged 4–6
Children between four and six are at the peak of imaginative and pretend play - and a teddy bears picnic gives that imagination a real, physical setting with real food, real blankets and real ceremony.
It also develops social skills in the most gentle way - taking turns, sharing food, introducing their bears, including everyone. The preparation involves real kitchen tasks appropriate for this age, and the whole experience has a wonderful quality of care and attention that children this age find deeply satisfying.
For grandchildren visiting grandparents, bringing a favourite bear to share in a picnic together is a memory that gets talked about for years.

How To Do It
Prepare the food together - children can help with spreading, cutting with cookie cutters and arranging on plates.
Pack the picnic basket together - this is its own delightful ritual.
Choose the spot - garden, park or even a special corner of the living room on a rainy day.
Lay the blanket and set places for every bear - a small plate, a cup and a napkin for each one.
Make bear name cards if you'd like - children can write or draw each bear's name.
Introduce the bears formally - "this is Mr Snuggles, he likes honey sandwiches."
Pour the tea (or juice!) and begin the picnic.
Play simple outdoor games after eating - what game would the bears like to play?
Pack up together at the end - the bears help!
Kim's Tips 💕
Cookie cutter sandwiches - stars, hearts, bears - make the food feel magical and special.
A children's tea set makes this feel completely real - pouring and serving is deeply satisfying for this age group.
Bear name cards written by the child add a lovely literacy element - even just drawing a picture of each bear is beautiful.
This is one of the most wonderful activities for grandchildren visiting grandparents - bring your bear, I'll set a place for them is one of the most charming invitations imaginable.
A rainy day indoor teddy bears picnic with fairy lights and a fort is just as magical as an outdoor one - possibly more so!
