“The Sound of This Christmas” Recording
We take plenty of photos at Christmas, but how often do we save the sounds?
The little voice wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. The family laughing at a terrible cracker joke. Someone calling out, “Lunch is ready!” while the kids are still searching for batteries. Even the dog joining in when everyone starts singing.
Those everyday sounds can become precious memories, especially as children grow and family life changes.
This activity turns a short Christmas recording into a keepsake you can hang on the tree. You save the recording online, create a QR code that links to it, and attach the code to a Christmas tag or ornament. When you scan it with your phone, you can open the recording and listen together.
Make a new one each year, and you’ll gradually build a collection of Christmas moments you can hear as well as remember.
Best Ages: All ages, with an adult managing the recording and links
Time Needed: Around 15–20 minutes, plus printing and decorating
Difficulty: Easy, with a little technology setup
Repeats Yearly? Yes - record a new moment each Christmas
What You Need
A phone with an audio recorder or camera
Somewhere to save the recording online, such as a cloud storage account you already use
A sharing link that allows your intended listeners to open the recording
A QR code generator that creates a static QR code from a web link
A printer, or access to somewhere you can print the code
Cardstock, a gift tag or a flat ornament blank
Glue or double-sided tape
A pen and ribbon or twine
Optional: coloured pencils, stickers or other simple decorations
How To
1. Choose a little moment to capture.
Think about what feels like your family’s Christmas. It doesn’t need to be a performance or something perfectly planned.
You might record:
A child saying their name, age and “Merry Christmas!”
Everyone answering, “What has been your favourite thing today?”
A few seconds of laughter around the dinner table
A loved one reading a line from a favourite Christmas story
A family greeting from someone celebrating far away
Everyone singing a short Christmas song together - enthusiasm counts more than being in tune!
Let anyone being recorded know what you’re making and check that they’re comfortable taking part. For children, check with their parent or carer too.
2. Record a short clip.
Open your phone’s audio recorder, or use the camera if you’d like to keep a little video as well.
Aim for around 10–20 seconds. You can make it longer if the moment needs it, but a short recording is easy to revisit.
Hold the phone close enough to hear the voices clearly without putting it right against someone’s mouth. Turn down the television or background music if you’re recording a greeting.
Play it back before everyone wanders off. Check that you can hear what matters - but don’t worry about every little background noise. Those sounds are part of the day too.
3. Give the recording a useful name and save a backup.
Use a name you’ll recognise later, such as:
Christmas 2026 – Family greeting
Save the original recording somewhere safe as well as uploading a copy. Having a backup means you still have the memory if you ever need to replace its online link.
4. Upload it and choose who can listen.
Upload the recording to your chosen online storage service and create a sharing link.
Check the sharing permissions carefully. A restricted link can keep access to invited family members, although they may need to sign in. An “anyone with the link” setting is simpler to open, but anyone who receives that link—or a photo of the QR code—may also be able to access the recording.
Choose the option you’re comfortable with, especially when children’s voices or videos are involved.
Test the link before moving on. If possible, ask another family member to open it on their phone so you know it works for someone other than you.
5. Turn the link into a QR code.
A QR code is simply a scannable shortcut to your recording’s web address. It doesn’t store the recording itself.
Paste your sharing link into a QR code generator and choose a static code that links directly to it. Check that you can download and keep using the code without a trial or ongoing subscription.
Save the QR image to your phone or computer.
6. Make your keepsake tag.
Print the code clearly in dark ink on a plain white background. Around 3–4 cm wide is a useful starting size for a tag, with an uncluttered white border around it.
Attach it to your cardstock or flat ornament blank. Keep glue, decorations and ribbon away from the code itself so your phone can read it.
Write the year and a little description beside it:
The Sound of Our Christmas — 2026
Scan to hear our family greeting
Decorate around the edges, add a ribbon and hang it on the tree.
7. Scan the finished tag.
Use your phone’s camera or QR scanner to check the actual printed code. Open the link and play the recording.
If it doesn’t scan easily, try a larger print or better lighting. A flat, matte surface is usually easier to scan than a curved or shiny one.
8. Bring the memories back next Christmas.
When you unpack the decorations next year, scan the previous tags and listen together before making your new recording.
You might hear how much a child’s voice has changed, remember a funny moment you’d forgotten or simply enjoy hearing everyone together again.
♥ Kim’s Tip
Keep your recordings in a clearly labelled Christmas folder, with a folder for each year, and keep a separate backup of the original files. Save the QR images and links there too.
Changing phones doesn’t necessarily affect a cloud link, but deleting a recording, changing its access settings or closing the storage account can stop the code from working. Test your tags when you bring out the decorations each year. If a link needs replacing, you can print a fresh code - the saved recording is the treasure.
And please don’t feel you need to capture the perfect Christmas. A little laughter, a familiar voice and someone interrupting halfway through might be exactly what makes it yours.
