Torch & Shadow Play
Blog post description.
LONG DISTANCE GRANDPARENTING

This is the one that will genuinely surprise you - and your little ones. Torch and shadow play is one of those wonderfully old-fashioned activities that somehow feels completely new again, and the reaction from toddlers the first time they see a shadow puppet dancing on the wall is something you will carry with you for a very long time. All you need is a darkened room, a small torch, and a few simple shapes - and suddenly your living room becomes a theatre. It's quiet, it's magical, and it has a way of slowing everything right down in the most beautiful way. This is one of my absolute favourites to suggest to parents and grandparents alike - especially for that gentle wind-down time in the late afternoon or before bed.
Why This Activity Works
Shadow play is rich with learning wrapped in wonder. Toddlers are exploring light and dark, cause and effect, shape recognition, and early storytelling all at once. Moving their hands and watching the shadow move in response is a fascinating discovery at this age, and the dim, calm environment has a naturally soothing quality that makes this perfect for quieter moments of the day. It also sparks imagination beautifully - once toddlers understand how it works, they begin to create their own little narratives with the shadows, which is storytelling in its very earliest, most magical form.

What You'll Need
A plain light-coloured wall or a white sheet hung up
Shadow puppet cut-outs on sticks (or make your own from card!)
A darkened room — curtains drawn in the daytime works beautifully
Optional: felt shapes, cardboard animals, or a shadow puppet theatre kit
How To Do It
Darken the room by drawing curtains or waiting until evening - it doesn't need to be completely dark, just dim enough for clear shadows.
Shine the flashlight at the wall and show your toddler their hand shadow first - this is usually the moment the wonder kicks in!
Introduce shadow puppet shapes on sticks - simple animals work beautifully. Move them slowly and give them voices.
Hand the flashlight to your toddler and let them explore making their own shadows - hands, fingers, puppets, toys.
Build a simple story together - the bunny meets the bird, the dog goes for a walk - and let your toddler direct the action.
For older toddlers, make simple card cut-outs together beforehand as part of the activity.
Kim's Tips 💕
Start with hand shadows - a bunny, a bird, a dog - before introducing puppets. The simpler the better to begin with. Books like this one can help you make the animals.
Sitting together on the floor with a blanket around you both makes this feel extra cosy and special - perfect for when grandchildren come to visit.
A white sheet hung over a door or curtain rod makes the most beautiful shadow theatre screen.
This is an absolutely perfect pre-bedtime wind-down activity - the dim light and calm atmosphere naturally ease toddlers toward sleep.
Simple cardboard cut-outs on paddle pop sticks make wonderful homemade puppets - making them together is half the magic.
