Hot Chocolate Mix in a Jar

Five Minutes and a Cosy Gift

If I had to pick the easiest gift in the whole series, this would be the one. There's no cooking at all. You whisk a few pantry ingredients together, spoon them into a jar, top it with marshmallows and tie on a tag. Five minutes, and you have a gift that people actually use.

It makes a thick, creamy, properly chocolatey mug, and the little chocolate chips melt into the bottom of the cup. Children love it, grandparents love it, and it's the perfect gift for teachers, neighbours and anyone you've forgotten until Christmas Eve.

Packaging and Gifting

• Jar: a clean, dry wide-mouth jar, 1 litre for a generous gift or 500 ml for a smaller one. A wide mouth makes it easy to scoop out.

• Decorate. A circle of fabric or brown paper under the lid, tied with string. Add a candy cane, a cinnamon stick, or a wooden spoon tied to the jar.

• Make it a set. Put the jar in a basket with a mug.

• Keep it dry. Make sure the lid is on tight and the jar is stored in a cool place.

Label wording:

Hot Chocolate Mix. Made on [date]. Contains milk, soy (from the chocolate) and may contain traces of nuts and gluten. Store in a cool, dry place, and always use a dry spoon.

Gift tag message:

To make: stir 3 tablespoons of mix into 1 cup of hot milk or hot water until smooth. Warm hugs in a mug. Merry Christmas!

Lovely things to pair it with:

• A pair of mugs, or one big, cosy one

• A packet of biscotti, or a small box of Christmas biscuits

• A jar of Christmas Rocky Road or a bag of mini marshmallows for topping

Allergen note: contains milk (milk powder and chocolate chips), and soy in most chocolate. May contain traces of nuts and gluten, depending on the brands. Because milk powder is the main ingredient, this isn't suitable for anyone with a dairy allergy, and it isn't dairy-free even when made with hot water. Always label your gifts.

Making It With the Kids/Grandkids

This is a lovely rainy-day activity for little hands, with almost nothing that needs an adult.

• Ages 3 and up: sift the ingredients (an adult measures them), stir in the chocolate chips, and tie ribbon and tags.

• Ages 4 and up: whisk the mix, with a bigger bowl to catch any flying cocoa. Lay a tea towel under the bowl so it doesn't slip.

• Ages 5 and up: spoon the mix into the jar with a funnel, add the marshmallows, and decorate the tag.

• Adults only: drying jars in a hot oven, and making the first test mug (the milk or water is very hot).

• Allergies first: check for any allergies in the recipient, and wash hands before you start.

Let a hot mug cool for a few minutes before children drink it. Cocoa powder gets everywhere, so wear an apron.
