Easy Meals to Batch Cook & Freeze for Elderly Parents
If you're caring for an elderly parent at home, you already know how much easier life is when the freezer is full.
No scrambling for dinner ideas. No standing over the stove after an already exhausting day. Just pull something out, warm it through, and know that Mum or Dad is getting a proper, nutritious meal.
I started batch cooking for Mum out of pure necessity. There were days I simply didn't have the time or energy to cook from scratch and the last thing I wanted was for her to miss out on a good meal because of it. So I started dedicating one afternoon a fortnight to cooking in bulk - and it genuinely changed everything.
The meals I make for Mum need to tick a few specific boxes. They need to be soft enough for someone who may have trouble chewing. They need to be nutritious and filling. They need to freeze well and reheat easily without losing their texture or flavour. And honestly - they need to be things she actually enjoys eating. Because what's the point otherwise?
Over time I've built up a collection of recipes that tick every single one of those boxes. Simple, wholesome, freezer-friendly meals that I make again and again.
I'm sharing them here one by one — so you can save the ones that suit your situation and come back as new ones are added. Whether you're cooking for a parent with a small appetite, someone who needs soft textures, or simply someone who deserves a home cooked meal even on the days you can't be there - I hope these help.
A Few Batch Cooking Tips Before You Start
Invest in good freezer containers. Individual portion sizes are the most practical — your parent can just pull one out the night before to thaw. I've linked my favourite freezer containers on my Amazon storefront here.
Label everything. A simple label maker is an absolute game changer for freezer organisation. I add the dish name, date cooked and reheating instructions to every container. Find the one I use on my Amazon storefront.
Cook once a fortnight. Set aside one afternoon every two weeks and batch cook 2–3 recipes. You'll have a freezer full of options without it feeling overwhelming.
Reheat gently. Always reheat frozen meals slowly — either thaw overnight in the fridge first, then warm through on the stovetop or in the microwave with a splash of liquid added to prevent drying out.
